Lessons from the Kruger – 25 years of coming to the park

I first came to the Kruger National Park in South Africa in 1991 when I worked and lived in Johannesburg.  It was love at first sight for me, and soon I came almost every weekend and holiday while living in South Africa.  I quickly learned the safari ropes and I share some of what I’ve learned over these past 25 years in this post at Allen on Africa.

  1. (It certainly isn’t a real “safari” when you are holed up in a fancy lodge the entire trip.) Have to disagree, Will. For me Londolozi is family. I ‘hanai’ adopted our latest ranger as my grandson. Getting ‘in the bush’ makes it exciting. Two game drives daily with knowledgeable rangers and exceptional trackers. We did self-drive when we lived there. Now (maybe it’s my age :>)) I like having someone else do the driving.

    1. A private game reserve is a nice experience, butKruger makes the African safari experience more accessible to more people. Will Allen provides a great service here by discussing the Kruger option. I have experienced it myself and am grateful to Allen for sharing it with others.

I’m sure you provided for the children of your adopted “grandson” to go to the South African universities of their choosing, as doing so is only the cost of a few days at Londolozi.

  2. I left a comment.  That said, I’m so envious of you trip back to Kruger and SA….don’t stop the blogs/posts.  Enjoy.  “Your eyes show the strength of your soul.” “Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.” The Alchemist. “…the place I love the most. . Africa is in my blood, it’s in my heart and soul…Londolozi.”

  3. Thanks for the wonderful update. Few of us have the derring-do to go out on our own. I’m glad you can do it and enjoy it so much !!
Saw a piece on Tanzania on “60 Minutes” last weekend and the shots of the Ngorongoro crater just thrilled. Have a wonderful Africa time.
